[Kickoff] Cost Action 21103 - Implementation of Circular Economy in the Built Environment (CircularB)

The 🥅 net is Closing in on ⭕ circularity greenwashing propaganda! Several breakthroughs took place this year regarding the evaluation and quantification of the circularity of buildings. The #SustainableBuildingDesignLab is at 💚 heart of those changes through their members Muheeb Al-Obaidy and Shady Attia.

ISO/TC 323 Circular economy committee started to develop frameworks, guidance, support tools, and requirements for the implementation of activities of all involved organizations, to maximize the contribution to Sustainable Development.

CEN/TC 350 - The sustainability of the construction committee works on specifying circular principles, guidelines, and requirements to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable circular economy in the built environment. A definition of circularity and evaluation framework for building materials and elements is under its way to see the light by 2024.

The EU regulatory Framework was updated for the CPR: Construction Product Regulation. To achieve a CE marking for any construction material, sustainability became an essential or basic requirement starting in 2026. This means that we will move from a declaration of conformance to a declaration of performance. The will be GHG emissions reporting obligation for all building materials. EPD will not be obligatory for all building materials categories (steel, concrete, timber, etc.). However, circularity reporting will be obligatory. However, each material group or product materials family will decide the level of circularity it wishes to apply.

On top of that comes our participation in COST Action n a new Cost Action 21103 - Implementation of Circular Economy in the Built Environment (CircularB). A new project with international experts will develop a common international framework of a circularity rating tool with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on current best practices of Circular Economy construction.
