[New Project]: IEA Task 43: Standardized use of building mass as storage for renewables and grid flexibility
Buildings in Western Europe are switching from heating dominated to mixed (heating and cooling) dominated regimes. π’ Buildings are important pillars for the future energy system. π Therefore, I attended the kick-off meeting of the recently started International Energy Agency (IEA) IEA Energy Storage TCP Task 43 on thermal-activated building mass storage as a Hybrid Event in Vienna, Austria. In the coming three years, the task community will work on harnessing the full potential of activated building masses as distributed storage technology for renewables and grid flexibility.
The Energy Storage Technology Collaboration Programme (ES TCP) facilitates integral research, development, implementation, and integration of energy storage technologies such as Electrical Energy Storage, Thermal Energy Storage, Distributed Energy Storage (DES) & Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES).

The Sustainable Building Design Lab at Liege University in Belgium, together with Southwest Jiaotong University in China, will join Subtask D to help:
β Develop KPIs for evaluating and benchmarking thermally activated building thermal mass storage focusing on Phase Change Materials.
β Establish generalized guidelines for constructing and controlling thermal-activated building mass storage as a reference for future planning and operation of thermal-activated systems.
β Collect a representative sample of best practice implementations of thermal-activated thermal building mass storage in uniform Technical Sheets.
