The global construction sector🏗 is accountable for one-third of carbon dioxide emissions 🌫, as well as forty percent of the world’s energy use 💡 and waste production 🗑. Given these environmental challenges, transitioning to sustainable and renewable construction techniques is crucial. Engineered timber 🌳, a champion among sustainable construction materials, has progressed to a point where it can be used not only for family housing but also for taller buildings 🏬, traditionally constructed with concrete or steel.

COST Action HELEN aims to create guidelines for the safe and sustainable ♻ construction of taller timber buildings, positively impacting human health and well-being 🧘‍♀️. The guiding principles will be based on the principle of interdisciplinary collaboration among various stakeholders within COST Action HELEN.

Specifically, “Workgroup 4 – Sustainability and Durability” aims to reply to the following questions:
✅ 1-  What measures are essential to ensure a high-rise timber building has a lifespan of 150 years?
✅ 2- How can we accurately predict the service life during the planning process?
The creation of the following survey is rooted in the necessity of responding to the second question. The primary objective is to define the actual service life for medium-raise (3 to 8 stories) and tall (above 8 stories) timber building components based on estimations provided by the experience and knowledge of timber building industry professionals.

Your expertise contributes immensely to the success of this initiative.
