Creative Commons (CC) licenses are public licenses. You can use them to indicate what others can do with your work. Each work is automatically protected by copyright, meaning others will need to ask your permission as the copyright owner. CC licenses let you easily change your copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.” They are legal tools to permit to share and use your work in advance – on conditions of your choice.

Creative Commons works within copyright law. It allows creators to grant everyone in the world permission to use their work in certain ways. Copyright law gives creators certain kinds of control over their creative work. If people want to use copyrighted work, they often have to ask for permission from the creator. There are six Creative Commons licenses: CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, CC BY-ND, CC BY-NC-SA, CC BY-NC-ND. The letter pairs indicate conditions for use.
