[Video] Open Access & Author Rights

To be able to disseminate knowledge in open access format you will need to learn about your rights as an author and your data ownership status. When we publish an article we sign an agreement with the publisher to copyright the form of the final manuscript. When you publish an open-access article, you will retain the copyright in your work. You will sign an author contract which gives the publisher the right to publish the Version of Record of your article. This author contract incorporates the Creative Commons license of your choice, which will dictate what others can do with your article once it has been published.

However, the content remains the intellectual property of the author. Many researchers get confused about that and stop sharing their articles. Therefore it is important to embrace best practices and learn about the ways to share your articles and datasets using public repositories or general archives. Never post data or share articles to personal websites because you might change jobs or retire, therefore, use public repositories.

Luckily in Belgium, all authors retain the right to make scientific articles available in Open Access, regardless of the terms of their contract with a publisher. (in the Moniteur Belge 2018).

In this video, you will learn about author rights, data ownership, and permissions to share published articles and learn how to license and share research data.
