[Video] Personal Data Protection & GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an example of the 'Brussels Effect' on the whole world. The impact of GDPR on research and artificial intelligence is remarkable. Therefore, the goal of this module is: To 1) learn about personal data and how to handle it, 2) learn about the GDPR of the EU and how to comply with its requirements in research. Personal data means any information relating to an identifiable natural person ‘data subject’; identifiable is a person that can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person.

Personal Data protection in the field of research is crucial. Processing for scientific research purposes shall be subject to appropriate safeguards. Those safeguards shall ensure that technical and organizational measures are in place to minimize data. Those measures include pseudonymization without the identification of data subjects. Pseudonymization means replacing any information which could be used to identify an individual with a pseudonym.
