[Workshop] Action for Cool Cities in North Africa, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa
Cities π are already on the front line of climate change π©οΈ. At least 70% of them are currently dealing with sudden-onset disasters and long-term environmental stress. Mid-size and small cities ποΈ are under enormous pressure β³ of endless urban sprawl driven by capitalistic π±real estate ποΈ. As part of the Connective Cities project, we are working with 14 municipalities from 8 countries representing North Africa, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa π to fight climate change through strategic planning and diverse mitigation and adaptation strategies from GHG emissions reductions and urban heat island mitigation π³. Municipal actors from various countries are together in Amman to exchange ideas and experiences focusing on ideation and prototyping of solutions for cooler cities not only in hot climates but also in cold climates.
This Workshop on 7-9 March is the second step of the learning process on urban tools for carbon reduction pathways and improvement of outdoor thermal comfort. The workshop build-up on learned lessons π‘ from the project such as the Covenant of Mayors, C40 Cities, and SECAP Climate Assessment Procedures. Through Deep Dive's long-term modular learning process and agile formats of short-term municipal crisis and risk preparedness solutions βοΈ, we are building the capacity of municipal experts toward climate change resilience. Within thematic working groups, participants will exchange ideas and experience on the following topics:
β Designing climate-responsive outdoor π³ public spaces and promoting the engagement of citizens.
β Strengthening steering structures: Interdepartmental communication framework in municipalities
β Optimizing existing building and urban design regulations by introducing key performance indicators π¦ and improving the in-house capacity π¦Ί
β The role of municipality as a regulator and implementer: budget analysis and strategies for cost recovery of climate action measures

The first live meeting of the project was in Amman Jordan. Our team is glad to work with Muna Shalan, Ricarda Meissner, Christiana Hageneder, Maisam Otoum, Luna Momani, and the municipal experts from Algeria, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Palestine, Tunisia, Zambia. I was inspired by @Akram Khraisat from Amman Urban Observatory. Maysoon Al-Khuraissat and Deema Assaf your contribution and sharing of your expert insights were quite inspiring, thank you for your active participation and advisory.
